This is why such a soul experiences excessive sadness and despair soon as signs of its own lack of integrity show up, with the consequence that it immediately feels unacceptable to God.  That’s why a sick soul is always hiding the truth from itself, the mechanism for which is endless self-justification. And why the correction of such a soul is always taken as rejection.

On Helping Souls That Are Being Tried
Do not lose your serenity on account of those who are being tried.  Pray for them; offer the sufferings of My Passion and some acts of self-denial, some self-imposed sufferings for them.”
Jesus to Sister Mary of the Holy Trinity

When souls are being tried, what they need from you is deeper love of Me—so that, through you, I may give them the grace they need.  So you see, you need your serenity even more at such times.  Do not try to buy peace for souls by losing your own!  Offer up your act of self-denial at such times, so that the soul who is suffering may get the grace to accept in joy what she cannot change—through your free offering of love.  You will see more and more how you are all instruments in the communication of My Love, for one another as for yourselves.  The more you will understand that, the more you will love one another.

On Feeling Unloved
Only the realization that I love you now, I, Jesus, who know all your misery, all your sins, the failure of your whole life, only the knowledge that I Who know how underserving you are of anyone‘s love, yet love you nevertheless with the Love of God Himself, can take away the pain and anxiety of feeling unloved by so many persons, and not undeservedly.

The Age of St. Bernard’s is not like Ours.
St. Bernard, commenting on the Canticle (Song of Songs)

"Or perhaps, drawn away and seduced by his own concupiscence, he is still being dangerously tempted. Such a soul as this does not need a Bridegroom but a Physician, and for this reason receives, not kisses or caresses, surely, but only remedies for wounds in oil and ointments."

Yes, Bernard, in your time this was true — for the time had not yet come to force men willy-nilly from the highways and byways to the wedding feast. Men were still strong and able to overcome concupiscence with a help of the Physician less than the Kiss of His Mouth, less than the embrace of His intimacy. But now we are as children, impatient as we are weak, and needing, therefore, to be fondled and kissed by the Mother and her spouse, by Mary and Jesus.  0 Bernard, those of your age, who could help yourselves, needed the Physician only to supply the ointments of which you speak. But we need the Kiss of this Bridegroom who condescends to the weakness of little ones, like this little one who is too weak to help himself and therefore cries out:
"Let him kiss me with the kiss of his mouth, for thy breasts are better than wine.  For my justification now is not that I am healed by the ointments of the Physician, but that I am in the arms of His Mother, that it is her purity that makes me worthy of His embrace, not my virtue."

If Something Is Painful
It seems I always assume that if something is painful, it is evil and to be avoided. Then, when I am suffering, I begin to think, and I do not rest until I have discovered some truth which I hope will remove the pain. But I do not think I do this only because I want to avoid suffering: it is rather that I look upon suffering as a sign that I am wrong somehow, that God is displeased with me, and therefore something in me must be changed.

O Thou, of Comforters the Best

Excerpt # 6 from The Redeemer's Call to Consecrated Souls a book of eccles. approved locutions by Our Lord to a contemplative French nun.
(It should be noted that these locutions profoundly influenced the writer of this website's meditations.)

This is the work of consoling that my Heart intends for the Feast of Pentecost fast approaching.  Listen therefore to what is addressed to each and every one of you, that you may keep it more closely in the depths of your hearts:  "Come unto Me all who labor . . . and I will give you rest" (Matt 11:28).

What is it, loving souls, that causes you the greatest suffering if not the awareness of weaknesses and deficiencies in your love response to my Heart, of your lack of correspondence to all the advances of my grace, of your pilfering and your cowardice in my Father’s service.  For you see, don’t you, that you have thus more or less deformed, effaced my Image in you, thwarting, hindering the divine work.
This awareness gets transformed in you as feelings of interior distress, of trouble and anxiety, each stain on your soul being a wound to my Heart.  Personal distress heightened by an apostolic distress at the thought of the numberless wounds that the stains of souls inflict on my Heart. Yet it was to console you in this deep, inner distress that I assigned to my Divine Spirit the mission of applying to you the healing power of my Blood.  As most Holy and Merciful Artist, Right Hand of my Father, not only does He cleanse but, in accord with the divine ideal, He redraws my Image.
He cleanses the deformed traits of egoism with my Blood.  By that same Blood He redraws the divine traits of my Love.  A work that He performs in the measure that the soul cooperates humbly and courageously:

lava, sana, riga [be cleansed, be healed, be firm]
In thus pouring out my Blood into the soul, the Spirit pours into it the Spiritual unction of Peace, his Peace, the true consolation of heaven.
Therefore, souls most beloved, if you want to console my Heart, constantly have yourself restored and be endlessly consoled by my divine Spirit. Yes, constantly, for through Satan’s endless solicitations your egoism is inclined to despoil your soul. Would that at the end of every day, or even better after every action, you might cultivate the habit by my Holy Spirit of turning to the restorative power of my Blood:

Divine Restorer, deign to restore me by the consolation of your redemptive Blood.

Thus will your soul be a chalice of consolation for Me.

The excellence of my Consoling Spirit is not only that He restores what has come undone, but that He renders it more beautiful.  He perfects the masterpiece conceived in the Mind of the Father.  . . .  For the Spirit, to restore is to perfect.  It was in order to complete and bring to perfection my work as Savior that I sent the Spirit into the world and am continually sending Him.  He is the Divine Illuminator and the Divine Restorer only so that He may be the Divine Animator.  Such is the distinctive mission of the Spirit of Holiness, the Sanctifying Spirit.

To animate means to transform, to transfigure.  The Spirit comes as a reformer to work on all that is deformed and disfigured in the soul, by conforming and configuring it to the Image of the Incarnate Word, and thereby effecting a marvelous, divine transfiguration.  Transfiguration that is the ultimate ideal of perfection to which every consecrated soul is specially called.

Souls, you who more or less feel yourselves a failure, overcome with egoism, come quickly to my Heart that wants to restore you to greater beauty through my Holy Spirit, that, by having you pass through the fire of love, wants to make you more pure, more divine.
Yes, remake you, which means to recast you in the burning crucible of infinite Charity.

____________

(From a Letter to a Spiritual Child)

"So, my beloved little child, do not worry your little head about your deficiencies! Love Jesus from Whom you must receive everything, and He will show you what you need, to love Him more and more, always. So promise me, my darling child, that the very moment you feel a misgiving about yourself and your deficiencies, you will stop thinking about that right away and go to Jesus, to find out what you need and what to do, but never leave Him to get what you need. That is how He teaches His littlest ones that He is God, that there is nothing outside of Him. And the one mortification we need is to mortify the silly idea that we need anything else. That is how we grow perfect, oh so fast, when we give up trying to find what we need to please Him outside of Him, outside of His Peace that He give to us, His Peace which is Himself.

Please ponder this very much, in His Heart,
with me, your beloved little brother and father, and you will see that His Peace and your contentedness in Him are everything. Then you will receive everything, because those who have shall receive."
