This is why such a soul experiences excessive sadness and despair soon as signs of its own lack of integrity show up, with the consequence that it immediately feels unacceptable to God.  That’s why a sick soul is always hiding the truth from itself, the mechanism for which is endless self-justification. And why the correction of such a soul is always taken as rejection.

On Helping Souls That Are Being Tried
Do not lose your serenity on account of those who are being tried.  Pray for them; offer the sufferings of My Passion and some acts of self-denial, some self-imposed sufferings for them.”

When souls are being tried, what they need from you is deeper love of Me—so that, through you, I may give them the grace they need.  So you see, you need your serenity even more at such times.  Do not try to buy peace for souls by losing your own!  Offer up your act of self-denial at such times, so that the soul who is suffering may get the grace to accept in joy what she cannot change—through your free offering of love.  You will see more and more how you are all instruments in the communication of My Love, for one another as for yourselves.  The more you will understand that, the more you will love one another.

On Feeling Unloved
Only the realization that I love you now, I, Jesus, who know all your misery, all your sins, the failure of your whole life, only the knowledge that I Who know how underserving you are of anyone‘s love, yet love you nevertheless with the Love of God Himself, can take away the pain and anxiety of feeling unloved by so many persons, and not undeservedly.

"Or perhaps, drawn away and seduced by his own concupiscence, he is still being dangerously tempted. Such a soul as this does not need a Bridegroom but a Physician, and for this reason receives, not kisses or caresses, surely, but only remedies for wounds in oil and ointments."

Yes, Bernard, in your time this was true — for the time had not yet come to force men willy-nilly from the highways and byways to the wedding feast. Men were still strong and able to overcome concupiscence with a help of the Physician less than the Kiss of His Mouth, less than the embrace of His intimacy. But now we are as children, impatient as we are weak, and needing, therefore, to be fondled and kissed by the Mother and her spouse, by Mary and Jesus.  0 Bernard, those of your age, who could help yourselves, needed the Physician only to supply the ointments of which you speak. But we need the Kiss of this Bridegroom who condescends to the weakness of little ones, like this little one who is too weak to help himself and therefore cries out:
"Let him kiss me with the kiss of his mouth, for thy breasts are better than wine.  For my justification now is not that I am healed by the ointments of the Physician, but that I am in the arms of His Mother, that it is her purity that makes me worthy of His embrace, not my virtue."

If Something Is Painful
It seems I always assume that if something is painful, it is evil and to be avoided. Then, when I am suffering, I begin to think, and I do not rest until I have discovered some truth which I hope will remove the pain. But I do not think I do this only because I want to avoid suffering: it is rather that I look upon suffering as a sign that I am wrong somehow, that God is displeased with me, and therefore something in me must be changed.

A faith which sees each moment as the gift of our Father.  O Jesus, Beloved Truth, let the sword which is You, the Word, cut always deeper between my soul and my spirit, between what I am in myself and what I am in You, so that I may see myself as You see me—nothing, nothing, nothing outside of You!
 
Do you understand why I tell you “God alone is”?  It is not to deny the fact that you too exist.  I tell you this because you do not understand the nature and the limitations of your own existence: you think that you exist in yourself—but the truth is that you exist only in Me.  Outside of Me you are nothing.
 
Contemplate that very, very much.  It is a truth which you can know even without faith, and yet how few, how very few of My children penetrate it!  To penetrate it is holiness, to penetrate that truth is to see everything as I see everything, in Myself.  Our whole purpose in permitting sin to come into the world was to teach you this truth through your own experience, to show you by your own enslavement to evil how much you depend on Us.  That was the preparation for My coming, My coming to redeem what was lost.  But I could only save those who knew they were lost without Me. 
 
No, there is no goodness outside of God.  That was what I meant when I said to the woman in the Gospel, “Why do you call me good?  God alone is good.”  Was I denying the goodness of the creature?  No.  But I had to point out the inclination of men, an inclination not only to find goodness in the creature, but to find it outside of God.  If you will look into yourself you will discover that as soon as you begin to be attracted to any created good, you are moved to take delight in that creature outside of Me.  And all the purity I desire for you consists in this, that you may enjoy nothing outside of Me.  But in order to do that you must first see and acknowledge the depth of your impurity, you must see how much you are a slave to the habit of first finding and then delighting in good things outside of Me.
 
And now do you see?  Do you understand how it is impossible for Me to give Myself to you when your heart is drawn so much to good things outside of Me? To understand this, is the secret of learning to hate your own soul, to hate it in order to save it.  You must hate your own soul, the principle of life within yourself, because it is really a principle of death, constantly drawing you away from Me Who am Life.  
Do you see that this is the very essence of sin, to desire a good outside of God?  I alone Am!  Whatever is outside of Me is nothingness, disorder and sin.  It seems to you that you sin when you desire some good with great intensity.  That is not Sin!  The very opposite: you could not desire good too much, because God is Good, and you cannot love God too much.  No!  the sin is not in your intense desire for that good; the sin is in desiring it outside of Me, the sin is in the disorder of desiring without measure and limit something which is itself measured and limited.
 
It is so important for you to understand this: you must not try to become holy by destroying the life I gave you: you must not try to please Me by killing your capacity for love.  That is a sin against love, and against life—and therefore a sin against Me, God Who am Love and Life.  No! you must correct your understanding so that the infinite capacity I gave you to love may be directed to the One Infinite Being.  But so many of My children fail to understand that! So many of them try to please Me, Who am Love, by destroying love in themselves!
 
Knowing that nothing exists outside of Me, you can see that you too have no being except in Me, that your very being is to be in Me.  That is why I told you the Kingdom of Heaven is within you. 
 
But just as you think of My gifts as though they were a material object, so you think of My Existence as something material too, as though you had to go out and look for Me in a certain place.  No! you will never find Me that way.  You will find Me, not as something you did not possess, but in your realization that you possess Me, that your being is in Me, in My Being, and that you are possessed by Me.
 
And now try to understand this too, that I, your God, in Whom you have our being, am that same Person Who desires endlessly to communicate Himself to you, not only by giving you your natural existence, but in giving you My very Life. 
 
Yes, I communicate to you both your natural and your supernatural existence.  But there is this great difference in the communication.  I communicate both your natural existence and your natural operation without any disposition on your part to receive it.  In your natural life you exist and you act only because I love you.  But your supernatural life is different.  True, you exist supernaturally; you are born again to My Life, in baptism, only because I love you.  But you act supernaturally, not only because I love you, but because you love Me.  You cannot act supernaturally unless you love Me.  It is true, you cannot love Me unless I am loving you: but it is just as true that I cannot love you unless you are loving Me.
 
And therefore, since I am within you, learn to seek Me, not outside of yourself, but within yourself—but seek to possess Me by allowing Me to give Myself to you in love.  Sink into yourself to find Me, but then only let Me love you.  Do not think you have to do something to persuade Me to love you.  I am waiting, waiting, always, to love you.  As soon as you want Me to love you, I am loving you—and you are loving Me.  Yes, I operate as quietly and mysteriously in your supernatural life as in your natural life.  Because I am so hidden, naturally it seems to you that you do the things you do of yourself—just as it seems you have your existence in yourself.  Yet it is I in Whom you have your being, and Who moves you to your every operation.  And likewise it is this same ‘I’ in Whom you have your supernatural life and being, and Who moves you to your acts of supernatural love in the same mysterious and hidden way.  But I give you this gift of My Love, by Which you are moved to love Me, only when you ask, as in My ordinary Providence.  I can of course do what I did to St. Paul.  I could move you to love me instantaneously, no matter what your previous disposition, but as I say, that is not My ordinary way, and it would be presumptuous to expect it.  No! I wait for you to ask—but what you are not aware of, is that your very asking is moved by My grace, by My Love.  I do not force you, I do not make Myself apparent, but all through the day I am trying to show You, in endless ways, how much I want to give Myself to you, and how much you need Me—so that you will ask Me spontaneously and naturally for all the things you need.  And then, even as you are asking Me, I am lovingly moving you to ask Me, hidden and delighted.
 
Yes, it is My joy to give you everything you need, because it is by My gifts that I convince you how much I love you.  I know, far, far better than you, how much you need to be convinced that I love you: that is why I am so anxious to overwhelm you with My gifts.  But I cannot give you the things you need unless you ask.  Do you see now what I meant by My simple words in the Gospel, “Ask, and you shall receive!”?  It is truly as simple as that.  But in order to ask, two things are necessary: you must convinced of My great desire to give, and you must be convinced too of your great need to receive. 
 
 
I tell you all this because it is important and necessary for you to understand it in order to grow in My Love.  You need so much encouragement, so much assurance that you are loved—and all the time I am waiting to give Myself to you.  You keep looking for some extraordinary sign, a sign that would be distinct from your very act of loving Me.  I want to give you My Love, and you want some extrinsic sign which, so you think, would move you to love Me.  What you do not understand is that the gift I give you in giving you My Love is your act of loving Me.  But you want some other gift.  It is as though the water should say to the fire:  “I am cold.  Now it is up to you to make me warm—while I remain cold!”  Try very hard to understand this.  It is so important for you to understand it—how important you will realize only after you have understood it.  It is the meaning of “My just man lives by faith,” the faith in My Love for him.  And I give him My Love because he believes I love him, that I am actually loving him in this very moment.  You must understand that the very effect of My Love, for which you are asking, is to cause you to be asking, that if you were not already loving Me, if you were not already trusting My Love for you, you would not be asking Me to love you.  And all that is the effect of My loving you, mysteriously, as I am hidden within you.
 
Yes, as soon as your disposition is to love Me, then I am loving you—as the water is becoming hot just as the fire is heating it—not afterwards.  But you expect Me to do something first—and then, as result of what I have done, you think you will of your own free will, begin to love Me.  But that is impossible, and even though I am God, I cannot do the impossible—not that I am limited, but what is impossible just cannot be done.
 
My beloved child, it is so important for you to understand this!  Because without understanding it you keep waiting and waiting for something to happen between us—which will never happen.  You keep waiting for Me to give you some extraordinary sign that I love you—and all the time the most perfect sign of My Love for you is Its effect—that you love Me.
 
Do you see, then, that as soon as you are loving Me, I am loving you?  When you ask Me to love you, then, you are already loving Me, and I am loving you.  If you were not loving Me, you would not be asking Me to love you.  And if I were not loving you, you would not be asking Me to love you.
 
This too, is why I beg your confidence.  Because it is your confidence that enables you to be moved by My Love before you can see that you are being moved by It.   And that is the condition for My loving you more.  Now do you understand?  If you understand what I am saying here, you will see why it made Me so sad, in the Gospel, to think that persons were always asking for signs and miracles.  Without realizing it, they were asking Me to prove to them that I loved them in a way which would be impossible: they wanted a proof of My Love which would operate without moving them to love Me.  But even if I performed the external miracle, it would not be that miracle which would convince them.  How many, alas! were never convinced by all the miracles I performed!  It would be a far greater miracle to change their interior disposition:  “Because you have seen, you have believed: blessed are they who have not seen and have believed!”  Can you see here too the hidden meaning of My question to the Scribes, after I had told the paralytic that his sins had been forgiven?
 
They knew it was the prerogative of God to forgive sins, and therefore they were accusing Me of blasphemy in their hearts.  So I asked them: “Which is easier to say ‘Arise and walk,’ or ‘Your sins are forgiven you?’”  Of course it is easier to say ‘Arise and walk,’ for a man can perform a miracle: but only God can forgive sins—because only God has power to move the heart of a man, to change him from not loving to loving God.  Then I performed the exterior miracle—as a sign of the greater miracle which could not be seen.  My beloved child, do you see how much you are still asking for miracles and signs?  Do you see how wrong it is to be asking for miracles to change your hearts when I have given you faith?  Ponder My words:  “A wicked generation shall ask for a sign—but it shall be given no sign except the sign of Jonah,” the sign of My death and Resurrection, the rational motive of your faith.  Ponder this very much and learn how Good I am, and how hard and faithless you are.
 
Jesus, give me the faith to live only by the understanding You give me from moment to moment!  Save me from the frigidity of my own reason, from the formulas which make me blind and deaf to Your Word!

This is My Justice

That is My Justice—Which is One thing with My Mercy.  Because I have given My Life for you, I love you as I love Myself: I see no difference between us.  That is why I must give Myself to you—when I cannot give Myself to you, it is as though I cannot give Myself to Myself.  That is why I beg you to permit Me to give Myself to you—even though I am God, I cannot give Myself to you without your permission, I cannot give Myself to you unless you want Me.  Have you not had the experience in yourself of growing in your love for a person after you had suffered for him?  That is a little sign, a trace of what My Love for you is.  Do you see, that now it is as if I could not love Myself without loving you?  Do you see, then, how irrational it is to doubt My Love for you.  The one misgiving you should have is about yourself, about your disposition tor receive My Love—and yet, if you will observe yourself you will see that your misgiving is always about Me, about My disposition to love you!
 
There is so much for you to ponder in these few words, “I love you because I gave My Life for you.”  You will never exhaust the Love that hides beneath these few simple words.  Ponder them very much.  You do not understand how to grow in My Love, you do not see that when you are moved by love you are impelled to understand My Goodness, My Lovability, to convince yourself how much I love you—because it is your conviction that I love you so much which impels you to love Me more and more.  I give you little hints, like this, of how much I love you.  I do not tell you more, because the very use of your mind in searching out My Love for you is what disposes you to receive It more and more.  Think!  Just as the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Love proceeds from the Father through Me Who am the Word, Knowledge, Truth, so you must grow in love by growing in understanding.  Therefore, when you neglect to use your mind in order to see how much I love you, you are not growing in love as I would have you grow.  Do not think of My Love as though It were some beautiful, but material gift, as though It were a present I give to you all wrapped in an attractive package.  No!  My Love, the reality of My Gift of Myself to you, is your own act of loving Me as you contemplate My Goodness, My Selflessness in giving Myself to you, My desolation because you do not want Me.
 
When you listen to Me, I love you, I love you more, because it is when you are listening to Me that you are actually disposed to receive the Love I am always waiting to give you.  Do you see?  There are two principles of My Loving you, One in Me, the other in yourself.  When I tell you that I love you because I gave My Life for you, that is the first principle, the principle in Me, the cause of whatever you do to cooperate in My loving you.  Because I can only love you, ultimately, for My Goodness to you.  Anything good in you is only an effect of My Goodness.  But nevertheless you must cooperate freely in receiving My Love.  That is why I tell you here that I love you when you listen to Me.  Because when you listen to Me, you want to receive My Love—and it is then that you receive It.  It is then that the two principles are united: My desire to give Myself, and your desire to receive Me.
 
O Jesus, thank You for having taught me how impossible it is to do without You.  Teach this to all those I love in You, to all those You have given me to bring to You!  Then they will listen to You.  O Jesus, give them this gift, because unless You give it to them they will not be able to love You as You desire to be loved—they will not be able to be Your victim!
