This is why such a soul experiences excessive sadness and despair soon as signs of its own lack of integrity show up, with the consequence that it immediately feels unacceptable to God.  That’s why a sick soul is always hiding the truth from itself, the mechanism for which is endless self-justification. And why the correction of such a soul is always taken as rejection.

On Helping Souls That Are Being Tried
Do not lose your serenity on account of those who are being tried.  Pray for them; offer the sufferings of My Passion and some acts of self-denial, some self-imposed sufferings for them.”
Jesus to Sister Mary of the Holy Trinity

When souls are being tried, what they need from you is deeper love of Me—so that, through you, I may give them the grace they need.  So you see, you need your serenity even more at such times.  Do not try to buy peace for souls by losing your own!  Offer up your act of self-denial at such times, so that the soul who is suffering may get the grace to accept in joy what she cannot change—through your free offering of love.  You will see more and more how you are all instruments in the communication of My Love, for one another as for yourselves.  The more you will understand that, the more you will love one another.

On Feeling Unloved
Only the realization that I love you now, I, Jesus, who know all your misery, all your sins, the failure of your whole life, only the knowledge that I Who know how underserving you are of anyone‘s love, yet love you nevertheless with the Love of God Himself, can take away the pain and anxiety of feeling unloved by so many persons, and not undeservedly.

The Age of St. Bernard’s is not like Ours.
St. Bernard, commenting on the Canticle (Song of Songs)

"Or perhaps, drawn away and seduced by his own concupiscence, he is still being dangerously tempted. Such a soul as this does not need a Bridegroom but a Physician, and for this reason receives, not kisses or caresses, surely, but only remedies for wounds in oil and ointments."

Yes, Bernard, in your time this was true — for the time had not yet come to force men willy-nilly from the highways and byways to the wedding feast. Men were still strong and able to overcome concupiscence with a help of the Physician less than the Kiss of His Mouth, less than the embrace of His intimacy. But now we are as children, impatient as we are weak, and needing, therefore, to be fondled and kissed by the Mother and her spouse, by Mary and Jesus.  0 Bernard, those of your age, who could help yourselves, needed the Physician only to supply the ointments of which you speak. But we need the Kiss of this Bridegroom who condescends to the weakness of little ones, like this little one who is too weak to help himself and therefore cries out:
"Let him kiss me with the kiss of his mouth, for thy breasts are better than wine.  For my justification now is not that I am healed by the ointments of the Physician, but that I am in the arms of His Mother, that it is her purity that makes me worthy of His embrace, not my virtue."

If Something Is Painful
It seems I always assume that if something is painful, it is evil and to be avoided. Then, when I am suffering, I begin to think, and I do not rest until I have discovered some truth which I hope will remove the pain. But I do not think I do this only because I want to avoid suffering: it is rather that I look upon suffering as a sign that I am wrong somehow, that God is displeased with me, and therefore something in me must be changed.

TWELFTH  STATION:  JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS

(Genuflect, saying:  "We adore, Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee because by Thy Holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world."  Then kneel.)

"Do you see?  We have not yet given everything.  That is the meaning of death—not merely that your life is taken away from you, but that you have to die in order to have nothing left in yourself to give.  By your death you give Me everything, and everything you give Me is yours forever.  By your death you give Me everything so that I can give you everything.  By your death you become nothing, so that you can become Me.

“But you do not become nothing just by dying.  That is not the way I died, and it is not the way you are dying with Me.  No!  You die in Me by freely giving your life, as I gave My Life when I chose to give it.  So you give yours, freely, because now your will is Mine, and you freely will to die, therefore, when I will you to die.

“And now see with Me, in My last words, what there is still left for Us to give.  'Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.' Yes, My child, you have suffered many injustices as you were in Me, the injustices I suffered in you.  But I have taught you to be scarcely aware of what you suffered unjustly at the hands of the children of men.  And now, at the moment of death, you have a claim of justice.  This is the first thing I want you to give away.  Because with Me your only purpose in all you suffered was to receive My Mercy—not only for yourself, but in all the souls I had given you.

“And this is how you receive My Mercy, for yourself and for them.  The souls I have given you are those for whom and by whom you have suffered, in Me.  And now, in Me, make over all that suffering to My Mercy, so that you, like Me and with Me, may repay persecution with love. . . And now you possess no claim on anyone: as I repaid your sins with Love, so now you have repaid those who offended you with My Love in you, with your Love.  Now no one owes Us anything and We have repaid Our debt of Love.  'Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.'  Let every injury I have suffered unjustly become the means of grace for him who injured Me.  Forgive them, Father, because they do not know Your Love, they do not know that it is God that they are persecuting, they do not understand that I would that they be saved by what I suffer through them.

'Woman, behold thy son . . . . Behold thy Mother.'  With these words I gave you My Mother, and now, with Me, you give her to your children.  For she is your Mother as you are one with Myself.  I did not keep My Mother for Myself, so that souls might have her, and now you with Me must give her to souls.  Now there is nothing left for Us: everything is for the Father, for the souls the Father has given Us.  Now we give up all delight in Our Mother, so that souls who do not know her may have her for their Mother.

'Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with Me in Paradise.'  Even as I died I saved him who called on Me, and so, as you are dying there are those who are depending on you to be with Me in paradise.  Unlike Me, you do not know who they are by your own knowledge; you know them only in Me, in Faith, but in heaven you will know them and rejoice with them for all eternity.  Do you see, then, how this word of Mine is the fulfillment of the previous one?  Yes, when you gave away your Mother, you gave her to the soul who asks you now, in Me, for your prayers.  Now give your Mother, therefore, to him who is begging you, in Me, for your prayers.  Now give your Mother, therefore, to him who is begging you, in Me, for her, so that he may be with Me; give her very specially to those who are dying at this very moment, to sinners who would otherwise be lost, were it not for your love.  Say, then, with Me, to the sinners dying at this moment, 'Amen, I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with Me in Paradise.'  This is My Power which I give to you, which is now yours because you have loved Me with your whole heart.  And now that you are dying in Me, and with Me, you are not going to the Father alone, but with all those I have given you to bring to Me.  Therefore, give them the strength and the courage they need: say to them with Me: 'Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with Me in Paradise.'

'My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?'  O, My beloved, you who understand with Me the price My Love has paid for you, pity Me now as I am separated from the Father so that you may be with Him.  You who understand a little of the depth of My Love, pity Me now as I am separated from My Own Being for you!  Pity Me, that I may give you My Father as I have given you My Mother, in the full measure of My Love.  For even now My desire to be loved and to be pitied is that I may give you everything!  No!  Until now, much as you have loved Me, you have not understood My Love for you.  You must die with Me, you must be separated from the Father with Me to know what My Love is.  Until now you have not understood that My Love for you is identical with My Love for Myself.  Here, as you see Me separated from the Father, you can understand, as you die with Me, a little of what this means.  Do you see?  To love Myself means for Me to be Loved by My Father; I have no other Love except that, the Love of My Father in the Holy Spirit.  All My Love, like everything I have, is given to Me by My Father.  And as I am loved, so I Love you.  And, therefore, when I see you without the love I would want you to have, My very Own Love, I Myself am separated from Love, I am separated from My Father in Whom is all My Love, Our Love, the Love of the Holy Spirit.  O My beloved, now ask that you may die with Me in order to understand and receive My Love.  I, Love, am now separated from Love, in order that you may love, that you may be united with Love.  Do you see, My little beloved?  Do you see that as I Love Myself, so I Love You?  There is no difference!  Do you see a little of what this means?  Do you see that My need to love you is My need to love Myself?  Can you see, then, what you do to Me when you do not permit Me to love you?  Can you see that then you refuse to permit Me, God, to love Myself, to be Myself?  Yes, together now you can understand this Mystery of My Love for you, now you can understand a little of the agony of My Love for you, rejected by so many, by so very many!  Now you can feel with Me a little of My desolation in being separated from My Life, from My Father, from My God, I Who am God!  'My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken Me?'

“'I thirst.'  Do you understand the meaning of this cry?  I thirst for My Father now because I cannot love Him in souls.  I thirst for love, and My need for Love cannot be satisfied because My Father cannot love Me in souls.  That is how I thirst for souls: I thirst to be Myself in Souls.  I thirst for your love of Me in souls, your love which is My Love.  I thirst that by My Love in you souls may become Me, that the Father may love Me in them as He loves Me in Myself.  I thirst because when He cannot love Me in them I am separated from Him.  Do you see how true it is, My little beloved, that I love you as I love Myself?

'It is consummated.'  Yes, now everything is accomplished.  I have given away My justification in Myself to make you just in Me; in Me your sins have bought your salvation.  I have given you My Mother, I have separated Myself from her that she might be yours.  I have given you all the souls you were ordained to bring to Me, from the beginning.  I have given you My Father, My Life, separating Myself from Him as I was separated from My Mother, that He may be yours forever.  And I have left you My one plea, for souls!  I have left you My thirst.  Now everything is finished.  I have done everything the Father gave Me to do, and you have done what I have done—in Me.  And now, as I die, let your dying to yourself be consummated in My death!  My little beloved, come now, we are dying together—My little beloved!

'Into Thy hands I commend My Spirit.'  Yes, that is the way We die together, not violently, as though the separation of soul from body, willed by My Father were something contrary to Our Will, but freely and lovingly, giving the Father from Whom everything is, Our spirit, Our soul animated by His grace.  For now everything is returned to the Father.  As We have lived, so now We die, wanting only what the Father wants, wanting it only because He wants it, adoring His Providence in the perfect trust of His Son.”

(And now say Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, O Jesus, forgive us our sins, etc.  As you rise to walk to the next Station, say:  "Jesus, Mary, I love you!  Save souls!" three times, to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.)
